Chalice UU Congregation: Staff

Director of Congregational Life: Elizabeth Bukey

Elizabeth Bukey cares deeply about helping you find a pathway to belonging at Chalice, and to move out from that belonging to seek justice in the wider world.

A lifelong UU and native of Seattle, Elizabeth attended Union Theological Seminary in New York City, a Christian school that's the oldest independent seminary in the country. While in seminary, she traveled to the Texas — Mexico Borderlands, and interned at Middle Collegiate Church, a culturally diverse, inclusive and growing community of faith in New York City. She served as a hospital chaplain in Seattle and completed her ministerial internship at First UU Church of San Diego. Elizabeth also works for the Church of the Larger Fellowship, coordinating UU worship online.

Elizabeth lives in San Diego with her beloved (but growly) rescue dog, Lyuba. She also sings with the San Diego Women's Chorus and enjoys running, yoga, and baking with chocolate (though not at the same time).

Office Administrator: Kathleen Swift

Kathleen Swift has been a member of the Chalice Community since 2010. Until now, most of her professional experience has been in the field of public education, both as a teacher and school principal. She is very happy to have the opportunity to serve Chalice while experiencing professional growth in new ways.

Kathleen is the mother of three amazing adult sons, and one beloved grandson. She and her loving partner, Judy, live in beautiful Valley Center where they enjoy bountiful organic gardening, beautiful sunsets, and stargazing. Kathleen and Judy also enjoy the company of their animals: three cats and one dog.

For Kathleen, though the skills and duties she has as Office Administrator are many and varied, the most important is fostering a welcoming, genuine, and healthy atmosphere for all who are a part of Chalice.

Music Director: Tim McKnight

Tim McKnight hails from the rural Midwest, but relocated to San Diego in July 2004. One month later, Chalice UU Congregation hired Tim as Music Director, a position he has held ever since. Tim received both his Bachelors Degree in Music Education as well as his Masters Degree in Accompanying and Vocal Coaching from the University of Illinois @ Urbana-Champaign. In addition to his music ministry at Chalice, Tim teaches a studio of over 20 private piano and voice students. He also is a professional accompanist, collaborating with both vocalists and instrumentalists for recitals, auditions, college juries, competitions, etc. Tim has served as musical director, conductor, vocal coach and pianist for both opera and musical theater productions in Illinois and throughout San Diego County. In June 2012, Tim will be conducting a special performance of UU Composer Jason Shelton's "Sources: A Unitarian Universalist Cantata" with over 100 singers and instrumentalists from all of the UU congregations in San Diego County.
