Congregants are eligible to volunteer with our Religious Education Program in some key ways:

If you are interested in serving on the Family Ministries Team, contact the acting Chair, Reverend Sharon Wylie (revsharonwylie@gmail.com).

If you are interested in working behind the scenes, such as assisting with procuring materials or helping with prep work for upcoming classes, contact our Director of Family Ministry, Kathleen Swift (dfm.chaliceuu@gmail.com).

If you are interested in working directly with children or youth you must:

  • Attend Chalice for at least six months
  • Turn in a completed Application Form (which includes a reference check)
  • Turn in a background check form and be cleared. The form to authorize a background check and submission instructions are available on our forms page.

New volunteers are RE Assistants, who have the following responsibilities:

  • Read over the lesson plan (it will be emailed during the week before the class)
  • Arrive by 8:45 and help the Lead Teacher before and during class
  • Take attendance
  • Ensure unregistered children are registered

After you are comfortable with assisting (typically at least three sessions) you will be eligible to serve as an R.E. Leader. Lead teachers have the following responsibilities:

  • Read over the lesson plan (it will be emailed during the week before the class)
  • Arrive by 8:45; connect with the assistant to discuss the session
  • Obtain any special supplies needed for the class
  • Make sure attendance is taken
  • Take the lead on deciding any needed changes in activities or materials
  • Make sure materials are put away and the rooms is returned to its default configuration

A typical Sunday includes:

  1. Opening
  2. Review consequences for misbehavior (posted on the wall in each room and available here)
  3. Discussion prompts
  4. Lesson
  5. Activity
  6. Clean-up
